Pulkit's 'Kartavya' is a taut, morally murky thriller that asks a simple question: how far would you go to protect your family when the system fails you? Saif Ali Khan plays a weary police officer, ACP Vikram Rathore, whose life is upended when his wife (a quietly fierce Rasika Dugal) and young son become targets of a shadowy crime syndicate. The film wastes no time establishing the stakes: a chilling opening sequence involving a phone call and a ticking clock sets a tone of relentless pressure. Khan sheds his usual suave persona for a performance of coiled tension, his eyes betraying a man torn between the letter of the law and his primal instincts. Sanjay Mishra, as his cynical but loyal subordinate, provides a grounding presence, while Saurabh Dwivedi is genuinely unsettling as a calculating antagonist who never raises his voice but makes every word feel like a threat. The cinematography by Anshul Chobey uses tight, handheld frames in claustrophobic interiors and wide, desolate exteriors, mirroring the character's internal isolation. The pacing is relentless, with the 109-minute runtime flying by as the plot tightens like a noose. The score by Vishal Bhardwaj is sparse but effective, using a recurring low drone that amplifies the dread. Where 'Kartavya' excels is in its refusal to offer easy answers—the line between hero and vigilante blurs until it's almost invisible. It's a film that trusts its audience to sit with the discomfort of moral compromise. However, the supporting cast outside the central trio feels underutilized, and a late-act twist, while clever, slightly undercuts the emotional momentum.
